He is now in charge of City Hoops & Easts Basketball Junior development and coaching programs. Each month I will be bringing you a coaching tip to improve your game. FULL PROFILE HERE

Much of the focus of defense is on the individual positioning of the players; defending the ball, denying the wing, boxing out. Today we will take a quick look at some key team concepts that should help you on the defensive end of the court.

1. Pressure the attacking players:

The first thought on defense should be dictating the play to the offence. We often see teams sit back and let the offence take the lead by running their plays and defenders remain in a read and react mindset. One of the most effective strategies is to attack the offence, disrupt the plays they want to run and push them into areas of the court they do not want to go to.

A simple but effective strategy is to deny the ball to the main offensive player. Start with the point guard, as he or she will normally be charged with initiating the offensive set. Prevent them from getting to the ball for as long as possible. Make them feel rushed and out of sync with their team and you will test the resolve of the offence and the mental strength of the players on the court.

A good defensive team forces the offense to react to them. Forcing the offense to play your style is the first step in becoming a better defensive team.

2. Help your team-mates:

Constant vigilance and use of your peripheral vision is crucial to becoming a better defensive team. Always know where the ball is on the court. Pointing one hand in the direction of the ball and the other at the player you are marking can help keep you balanced and aware on defense. It is the team’s job to defend the ball and the basket. Knowing where the ball is and being able to help your team mates stop the ball getting to the basket makes dribble penetration more of a challenge for the offence. Knowing you are expected to help out at any time keeps players vigilant and aware on the defensive end of the court. It also builds team spirit!

3. Communication

Talking can be the most unifying way for a team to work as a single unit. Clear, concise and effective communication between defenders can make it seem like individual players have eyes in the back of their head. The defensive unit can see all directions on the court and if they communicate smartly they can make players aware of picks, cuts, set plays and more.

You are a group with a common goal, effective communication helps you to act like it. Simple things like “screen right or left” make the on the ball defender more aware. “Helping you right/left”, this gives team-mates confidence and may also make the offence reconsider their planned movements.

Once everyone works on the same wavelength and that they are supporting each other in a common goal, confidence increases, as does the flow and chemistry of the team.

Build your defense on the principles of pressure, help and communication. If your team commit to this, you will act as one defensive group. The confidence and flow of your team play will improve on both ends of the court.

Thanks for reading and happy defending.

COACH JAMIE 3on3 BASKETBALL TIPS

JAMIE ANDERSON COACHING DIRECTOR Coach Jamie has extensive international coaching and playing experience and has come to be regarded as one of the best basketball coaches in Sydney. FULL PROFILE HERE

THIS MONTHS TIP: Play 3 on 3 Basketball as much as you can

It is coming into the holiday season, which means it is time for us all to have some fun. This month we will look at the classic playground game, 3 on 3 or 3v3, 3x3 as it is some times called

3 on 3 games mean more space, shots, passes and opportunities for every player. All of which can make a big impact on our skills for the start of the new season in 2017.

If you have been working on your ball handling, following last month’s tips, you should now have a little bit more confidence when putting the ball on the floor. This is a crucial aspect of 3 on 3 games, as you have to be able to beat your defender 1on1 and make good decisions under pressure.

3 on 3 is a perfect practice environment, as long as you don’t forget your fundamentals:

A balanced body position is the foundation for all other basketball movements, on offence and defencePassing and cutting to the basket keeps the game flowingIf in doubt, set a pick!

Remind yourself of these simple rules every time you play.

3 on 3 Player Tips:

Start in Triple Threat, keep your head upYour focus should be on the whole court, so use your peripheral visionIf you can make one aggressive dribble move into the key, then DO IT!Call for a pick and roll to get your offence moving

3 on 3 Team Tips:

Work in triangles, passing and cutting to the basket helps you work as a unit,Keep the key open and force the defenders to work hard, rather than just daring you to take the outside shot.Use Pick and Rolls on the ball, or cross-screens off the ball. The more the defenders have to think, the easier it will be for you to get open.Box out as a team when playing defence. Many players forget to work as a team, but 3 on 3 shows what a difference boxing-out and communicating can make.

Summer in Sydney is a perfect time to make new friends and improve your skills while playing 3on3 basketball.

Don’t forget to register for our upcoming 3 on 3 competition in January 2017:

http://eastsbl.com.au/pages/3on3bondi

COACH JAMIE'S COACHING TIPS

JAMIE ANDERSON COACHING DIRECTOR Coach Jamie has extensive international coaching and playing experience and has come to be regarded as one of the best basketball coaches in Sydney. FULL PROFILE HERE

THIS MONTHS TIP On the back of doing some great work with young up coming star Jack Ringrose at our Handles Clinic (See video below). I thought I would continue on the handles tip. (Pun intended)

Playing basketball doesn't necessarily improve ball handling.

Improving your ball handling only comes from ball handling drills. If you were going to learn guitar, you wouldn’t join a band, instead you would practice at home, so neither should you play basketball to learn the game. One great thing about ball handling is you can do it anywhere. Take a ball to School, at home, in your garage, in the street. A little work at home will go a long way with improving your skills on the court.

Our tip for things you can do around the home are.

1. Tip Drill Tip the ball back and forth from one hand to the next, starting with your hands straight up over your head. Then gradually move the ball down, while continuing to tip it back and forth. Go down to your chest, then your waist, knees, and ankles, and then back up again. Keep your elbows straight and only let the the ball touch fingertips, not the palms.

2. Circles Drill Put your feet together and make circles around both legs. Then circle around the back. And then circle around the head. Then combine them and move the ball in circles around your head, then down your body, down around your knees, and then around your ankles. Then come back up again. Try to only touch with the fingertips, not the palms. 3. Around Each Leg and Figure Eights Drill Put one leg forward and move the ball in a circular motion around the leg. Then do the other leg. Finally, spread your legs out wide with the ball in front of you. Move the ball around through your legs in a figure-of-eight motion. Continue to look up and don’t let the ball hit the floor. After 40 seconds, reverse the direction.

RUSTY'S STANMORE MIXED CHAMPS

Our inner west Social Mixed Basketball competition finished up last night (Monday 29 August) and what a great comp is has been. Such is mixed basketball, she can be a cruel mistress.

Then onto the main event, the two form teams of the league. The Rustys vs Nets & Chill.

The Rusty's have everything a Mixed Basketball team could need, a big who can the boards, post up game, shooting, ball handling and women who can hoop!

On the other side of the court you have Nets & Chill, known as the team that can make it rain anytime and any spot on the court. You leave them open, they can hurt you and if you come up on them, they drive right past you. A real triple threat and this is what Social Mixed competition is all about.

As you know by the headline, Rusty's took the Monday Mixed Competition out, in a very close match where the 3 pointing shooting of Nets and Chill kept them in the game.

Our next Mixed Social Competition @ Stanmore is in a couple weeks.
